This article reviews the type of card sorting studies you can conduct with PlaybookUX. Additionally, we support open, closed and hybrid card sorting.

There are three ways you can conduct a card sort with PlaybookUX

  1. Non-recorded card sort. The participant will complete the card sort on their own time, without a moderator present and without recording their screen. Once the participant completes the card sort, you'll be able to view results in the PlaybookUX dashboard. Learn more about setting up a card sort here.

  2. Card sort with an unmoderated recording. The participant will record their screen and voice while completing the card sort activity. Once the participant completes the session, you can view a video recording on the participant completing the card sort & the standard card sort analytics.

  3. Card sort with a moderated session. A member of your team will join a call with the participant while they share their screen and complete the card sort. This is a great way to ask follow up questions to understand how participants categorize information.

To view the analytics specific to the card sort (i.e. similarity matrix, dendrograms etc) head the card sort project. Additionally, you can view the video recordings in the unmoderated project.

How to set up a card sort with an unmoderated session

Start by creating a "bring your own participants" card sort. Once you've set up your card sort, you'll receive a URL. Make sure to copy that URL.

Next, you are going to set up a second project. This time select "Unmoderated" as the project type.

You can select either "PlaybookUX participants" or "My Participants", depending on which audience you'd like to target.

When you get to the "Create Questions" step, select "Use a template"

We have a template that's perfect for unmoderated card sorts!

Once you've pulled in the card sort template, make sure to update the URL to the card sort URL you've previously set up. The URL will begin with "https://tester.playbookux.com...."

You can always access the link to the card sort by going back into the card sort project and clicking on the "Study" tab. At the top of the page, you'll be able to copy the card sort URL.

How to set up a card sort during a moderated session

Similar to unmoderated card sort, to set up a moderated card sort, first start by creating a non-recorded "bring your own participants" card sort.

Once you've set up your card sort, you'll receive a URL. Make sure to copy that URL.

Next, you are going to set up a second project. This time select "moderated" as the project type.

You can select either "PlaybookUX participants" or "My Participants", depending on the audience you're looking to target.

When you join the moderated session, you can send the card sort URL to the participant through the Zoom chat.

You can always access the link to the card sort by going back into the card sort project and clicking on the "Study" tab.

To view the analytics specific to the card sort (i.e. similarity matrix, dendrograms etc) head the card sort project. Additionally, you can view the video recordings in the moderated project.

Note: You need an active GROW or SCALE plan to access card sorting.
