A speak out loud study involves reviewing a website while you speak your thoughts out loud.

This can be on mobile, tablet or a computer. It’s pretty much a survey where you’re speaking out loud. The key here is speaking all of your thoughts out loud consistently during the study. Unless you speak your thoughts out loud, your video won’t be valuable because we can’t read your mind!

What to do:

  • An excellent participant is someone who speaks their thoughts aloud at all times while taking the study. They do more than simply read the content of the page, they make insightful comments and talk about things they like / dislike. Offering suggestions for improvement is a common characteristic of excellent testers.

  • Answer every question

  • Complete every task that is asked during the study

  • Speak loud and clearly

  • Perform the study in a quiet room without distractions

  • Take a minimum of 10 minutes to complete the study

  • Talk about what you like, dislike or should improve

What not to do

  • Only reading the content off the page without providing answers to the task or feedback on it.

  • Say everything looks “ok” without suggestions for improvement

  • Skip questions

  • Take the study with loud background noise

  • Use profane language
